What Stripe is

Stripe provides online payments and billing. Shopify Payments runs on Stripe in many countries, but a separate Stripe account is not the same thing and can't always be added to a Shopify store.

How we would approach Stripe with Shopify

First we check your store's country. Where Shopify Payments is available, Stripe usually doesn't appear as a separate gateway, and Shopify Payments is the simpler route. Where it isn't, Stripe can be a third-party provider. If you bill outside the store (invoices, B2B, other channels), we look at how Stripe and Shopify orders should be reconciled.

  Shopify's own payments, which use Stripe in many countries. Orders, refunds and payouts stay in Shopify.

  Stripe as a third-party provider

  Available in some countries where Shopify Payments isn't. Set up in Shopify's payment settings; Shopify may charge an extra fee for third-party providers.

• Custom build

  Stripe billing beside Shopify

  Invoices, payment links or B2B billing run in Stripe, with orders created in Shopify by a custom app. Only when billing genuinely lives outside the store.

Where these projects go wrong

• Planning around Stripe before checking whether it is offered in your country.
• A custom Stripe checkout that bypasses Shopify's checkout and its order, tax and discount logic.
• Refunds made in Stripe that never reach the Shopify order.

Questions

Can we use our own Stripe account on Shopify?

Only where Shopify lists Stripe as a provider, usually countries without Shopify Payments. Elsewhere, Shopify Payments is the Stripe-backed option.

Is Shopify Payments the same as Stripe?

Shopify Payments uses Stripe in many countries, but it is Shopify's product with its own account, fees and payouts.
