Hotjar + Shopify integration

  • Analytics
  • UX Monitoring

Connecting Hotjar to Shopify comes down to three decisions: which data moves, which system owns it, and whether an existing connector is enough.

Describe your setup ↗

What Hotjar is

Hotjar, now part of Contentsquare, offers heatmaps, session recordings, on-site surveys and feedback widgets.

How we would approach Hotjar with Shopify

The most useful part of Hotjar for a store is often the survey, not the heatmap: one question at the right moment, such as "What nearly stopped you buying today?" after purchase. We add the tracking, mask personal data, respect consent, and set up a small number of surveys tied to the question your conversion work is trying to answer.

What the work involves

  • Hotjar tracking added, with personal data masked
  • Recording and surveys only after consent where required
  • One or two short surveys on product pages or after purchase
  • Findings combined with analytics before anything is changed

Ways to connect Hotjar and Shopify

  • Custom build

    Tracking code in the theme

The Hotjar site ID added to the theme or through Google Tag Manager.

  • Existing app

    Third-party install apps

Several Shopify apps add the Hotjar tag without editing code. They're from third parties, not Hotjar; check the developer before installing.

Where these projects go wrong

  • Surveys that ask too much, too early, and annoy buyers.
  • Recordings collected without a question to answer.
  • Hotjar and another recording tool running on the same pages.

Our experience

We haven't delivered a Hotjar project for a client yet. This page is how we would approach one, and we check access and platform limits before quoting.

Questions

Hotjar or Microsoft Clarity?
Clarity is free for recordings and heatmaps. Hotjar's surveys and feedback widgets are the reason to choose it.
What should we ask in a survey?
One question, at the right moment. After purchase: "What nearly stopped you buying today?" On an exit: "Is anything stopping you from buying?"

Before we scope the work

  • Which data or customer journey needs to connect, and which system owns it?
  • What access, plan features or API permissions are available?
  • Does an existing connector cover the requirement, including failures and updates?
  • Who will maintain the connection, and how will you know it is working?

Send your current setup and one real example of the flow you need. We'll tell you whether it can be done and what it would take.
