Headless Shopify integration

What Headless Shopify can do for your store, where it stops, and how we set it up.

Describe your setup ↗

What Headless Shopify is

A headless Shopify store keeps Shopify for products, cart and checkout but replaces the theme with a custom front end, built with Hydrogen or another framework.

How Ecom Majesty works with Headless Shopify

Headless is a big commitment: you take on hosting, every app that only works with themes, and the front end's maintenance. We compare your requirements with a theme first; often a theme with metaobjects and a CMS covers it. If headless is justified, we prototype the buying flow and the app connections before the full build.

What we configure

  • A written list of what the theme can't reasonably do
  • A prototype of the critical buying flow
  • Hosting, previews and monitoring set up
  • Ownership of content, deploys and maintenance agreed

Ways to set it up

  • Built in

    Hydrogen and Oxygen

Shopify's headless framework and its included hosting on paid plans.

  • Custom build

    Other frameworks

Next.js, Astro or others with Shopify's Storefront API, hosted on Vercel, Netlify or Cloudflare.

  • Built in

    A theme with a CMS

Often the better answer: a Shopify theme plus metaobjects or a headless CMS for content.

Where these projects go wrong

  • Going headless for speed, when the slowness came from apps and images.
  • Losing apps that only work with themes, and rebuilding them.
  • No budget for the front end's ongoing maintenance.

Our experience

We haven't delivered a Headless Shopify project for a client yet. This page is how we would approach one, and we check access and platform limits before quoting.

Questions

Is headless faster?
It can be, but a well-built theme is fast too. Speed alone rarely justifies the cost.
Can we keep Shopify checkout with headless?
Yes. Headless storefronts hand off to Shopify's checkout.

Before we scope the work

  • Which data or customer journey needs to connect, and which system owns it?
  • What access, plan features or API permissions are available?
  • Does an existing connector cover the requirement, including failures and updates?
  • Who will maintain the connection, and how will you know it is working?

Send your current setup and one real example of the flow you need. We'll tell you whether it can be done and what it would take.
