Google Tag Manager + Shopify integration

  • Analytics

Connecting Google Tag Manager to Shopify comes down to three decisions: which data moves, which system owns it, and whether an existing connector is enough.

Describe your setup ↗

What Google Tag Manager is

Google Tag Manager (GTM) manages marketing and analytics tags in one container instead of in the site's code.

How we would approach Google Tag Manager with Shopify

On Shopify, checkout doesn't run your theme or GTM directly. Checkout events come through Shopify's Customer Events, and GTM can be loaded inside a custom pixel to receive them. We decide which tags really need GTM, move the rest to Shopify's native integrations, and make sure every conversion is sent by exactly one source.

What the work involves

  • A list of tags and which ones genuinely need GTM
  • GTM loaded in a custom pixel for checkout events where needed
  • Each conversion sent by one source only
  • A test order checked in every connected platform

Ways to connect Google Tag Manager and Shopify

  • Built in

    Shopify's native channels

Google & YouTube and Facebook & Instagram apps send standard events without GTM. Start here.

  • Custom build

    GTM in a custom pixel

GTM loaded inside a Customer Events custom pixel, receiving Shopify's checkout events. It runs in a sandbox, so GTM's preview mode doesn't work there.

Where these projects go wrong

  • GTM and a native app both send purchases, so revenue doubles in GA4 or ad platforms.
  • Old GTM snippets left in the theme after moving to custom pixels.
  • Debugging with GTM preview, which doesn't work inside Shopify's sandbox.

Our experience

We haven't delivered a Google Tag Manager project for a client yet. This page is how we would approach one, and we check access and platform limits before quoting.

Questions

Can GTM run on Shopify checkout?
Not directly. Load GTM in a custom pixel and push Shopify's checkout events into its data layer.
Do we need GTM at all?
Many stores don't. Shopify's Google and Meta apps cover standard events. GTM helps if you run many tags or need custom ones.

Before we scope the work

  • Which data or customer journey needs to connect, and which system owns it?
  • What access, plan features or API permissions are available?
  • Does an existing connector cover the requirement, including failures and updates?
  • Who will maintain the connection, and how will you know it is working?

Send your current setup and one real example of the flow you need. We'll tell you whether it can be done and what it would take.
