GitHub Actions + Shopify integration
- Developer tools
Connecting GitHub Actions to Shopify comes down to three decisions: which data moves, which system owns it, and whether an existing connector is enough.
Describe your setup ↗What GitHub Actions is
GitHub Actions runs automated checks and deployments when code changes in a GitHub repository. For Shopify themes it checks code and pushes it to the right theme.
How we would approach GitHub Actions with Shopify
We keep client themes in Git so every change can be reviewed and rolled back. With Actions, every pull request runs Theme Check, and approved changes deploy to a preview theme with the Shopify CLI. The rule that saves the most trouble: the theme's settings file is never overwritten by a deploy.
What the work involves
- The theme in Git, with a branch per environment
- Theme Check on every pull request
- Deploys with the Shopify CLI and a Theme Access password stored as a secret
- Merchant settings protected from being overwritten
Ways to connect GitHub Actions and Shopify
Where these projects go wrong
- Deploys overwrite config/settings_data.json and wipe the merchant's theme editor changes.
- Pushing with --force overwrites remote files that were edited in the admin.
- A workflow that deploys on every push to every branch.
- The Theme Access password pasted into the workflow instead of stored as a secret.
Our experience
We haven't delivered a GitHub Actions project for a client yet. This page is how we would approach one, and we check access and platform limits before quoting.
Questions
- Shopify's GitHub integration or GitHub Actions?
- The built-in integration is fine for simple themes. Actions adds checks and builds before deploy, which matters once several people work on the theme.
- Can merchants still edit the theme in the editor?
- Yes, if the settings file is excluded from deploys. Otherwise their changes get overwritten.
Before we scope the work
- Which data or customer journey needs to connect, and which system owns it?
- What access, plan features or API permissions are available?
- Does an existing connector cover the requirement, including failures and updates?
- Who will maintain the connection, and how will you know it is working?
Send your current setup and one real example of the flow you need. We'll tell you whether it can be done and what it would take.
