Algolia + Shopify integration
- Search
Connecting Algolia to Shopify comes down to three decisions: which data moves, which system owns it, and whether an existing connector is enough.
Describe your setup ↗What Algolia is
Algolia is a hosted search and discovery service. On Shopify it replaces the built-in search with faster autocomplete, typo tolerance, filters and merchandising rules.
How we would approach Algolia with Shopify
Search is a conversion tool: people who search usually know what they want. We start from your search data (the top queries, the ones with no results) and set up Algolia to answer those first: synonyms, ranking, filters that match how customers describe products. The app works through app blocks, so we test it on a duplicate theme before publishing.
What the work involves
- Products, variants, collections and pages indexed
- Autocomplete and results page added through app blocks
- Synonyms and ranking tuned on your real searches
- A check of searches that return nothing
Ways to connect Algolia and Shopify
Where these projects go wrong
- Installed with default ranking and never tuned against real searches.
- Filters and facets don't match the attributes customers use.
- Zero-result searches aren't monitored.
- Search results show products that can't be bought.
Our experience
We haven't delivered a Algolia project for a client yet. This page is how we would approach one, and we check access and platform limits before quoting.
Questions
- Do we need Algolia, or is Shopify search enough?
- For small catalogues Shopify's own search and filters may be enough. Algolia pays off with large catalogues, lots of search traffic or complex attributes.
- Can Algolia still change our theme code?
- No. Since the end of 2023 Shopify apps add features through app embeds and blocks instead of editing theme code.
Before we scope the work
- Which data or customer journey needs to connect, and which system owns it?
- What access, plan features or API permissions are available?
- Does an existing connector cover the requirement, including failures and updates?
- Who will maintain the connection, and how will you know it is working?
Send your current setup and one real example of the flow you need. We'll tell you whether it can be done and what it would take.
