Akeneo + Shopify integration

  • PIM

Connecting Akeneo to Shopify comes down to three decisions: which data moves, which system owns it, and whether an existing connector is enough.

Describe your setup ↗

What Akeneo is

Akeneo is a product information management (PIM) system. Teams use it to enrich product data once (names, descriptions, attributes, media, translations) and publish it to every sales channel, including Shopify.

How we would approach Akeneo with Shopify

The connector is the easy part. The work is the field map: which Akeneo attributes become Shopify product fields, options, variants, metafields or media, and which system wins when someone edits the same field in both. We write that map first, test it on a sample of your hardest products (many variants, several languages, discontinued items), and only then choose or build the connector.

What the work involves

  • A field map from Akeneo attributes to Shopify products, variants, metafields and media
  • Stable identifiers so products and variants match on every sync
  • A rule for each field saying which system owns it
  • Tests for the first import, later updates and records that fail

Ways to connect Akeneo and Shopify

  • Existing app

    Akeneo App for Shopify

Akeneo's own connector, listed on the Akeneo marketplace. It sends product details, variant attributes and media from Akeneo to Shopify on a schedule or on demand, and reports failed syncs. Check which Akeneo package includes it.

  • Existing app

    Third-party connectors

Several vendors sell Akeneo–Shopify connectors, including StrikeTru (listed on the Shopify App Store) and Webkul (listed on the Akeneo marketplace). Compare how each handles variants, metafields, translations and deletions before choosing.

  • Custom build

    Custom sync

Worth it only when your catalogue logic doesn't fit a connector, for example products that are assembled from several Akeneo records, or a second system that also writes to Shopify.

Where these projects go wrong

  • Akeneo's product model and Shopify's options and variants don't line up one to one, so variant-heavy products need a decision before any sync runs.
  • Shopify limits the number of options and variants per product. Check your largest product families against the current limits first.
  • Editors change the same field in Shopify and in Akeneo, and the next sync silently overwrites one of them.
  • Translations are set up in Akeneo but the store's languages and markets aren't configured to receive them.
  • Deleted or discontinued products stay live in Shopify because the connector only creates and updates.

Our experience

We haven't delivered a Akeneo project for a client yet. This page is how we would approach one, and we check access and platform limits before quoting.

Questions

Is there an official Akeneo connector for Shopify?
Akeneo offers the Akeneo App for Shopify through its own marketplace. Third-party connectors are also available, including one listed on the Shopify App Store. Which one fits depends on your variants, metafields and languages.
Should product data be edited in Shopify or in Akeneo?
Pick one owner per field. Usually Akeneo owns product content and Shopify owns price, stock and merchandising, but the right split depends on who edits what today.
Can you migrate our catalogue into Akeneo first?
That is a data project of its own. We can scope it, but we'd treat it separately from the Shopify connection so each can be tested.

Before we scope the work

  • Which data or customer journey needs to connect, and which system owns it?
  • What access, plan features or API permissions are available?
  • Does an existing connector cover the requirement, including failures and updates?
  • Who will maintain the connection, and how will you know it is working?

Send your current setup and one real example of the flow you need. We'll tell you whether it can be done and what it would take.
