Adyen + Shopify integration

  • PSP

Connecting Adyen to Shopify comes down to three decisions: which data moves, which system owns it, and whether an existing connector is enough.

Describe your setup ↗

What Adyen is

Adyen is an enterprise payments platform. Large retailers often use it to run payments across online stores, apps and physical shops through one provider.

How we would approach Adyen with Shopify

Adyen makes sense when one payment provider across channels is worth more than Shopify Payments' built-in tools. Shopify says that with Adyen you lose Shopify Payments features such as dispute management and card-testing prevention, and not every Adyen local method is available. We map that against your markets and methods, then test payments, refunds and failures before switching.

What the work involves

  • A comparison of Adyen and Shopify Payments for your markets and methods
  • Payment methods confirmed as available through Adyen on Shopify
  • Fraud and dispute handling planned without Shopify Payments' tools
  • Payments, refunds and failures tested before going live

Ways to connect Adyen and Shopify

  • Built in

    Adyen on Shopify

Adyen added as a third-party provider in Shopify's payment settings. Needs an Adyen account and Shopify Checkout (Checkout Extensibility on Plus).

  • Built in

    Shopify Payments

Shopify's own payments, with dispute management and fraud tools built in.

Where these projects go wrong

  • Assuming every Adyen local payment method works on Shopify.
  • Losing Shopify Payments' fraud and dispute tools without a replacement.
  • Switching providers in peak season without a test period.

Our experience

We haven't delivered a Adyen project for a client yet. This page is how we would approach one, and we check access and platform limits before quoting.

Questions

Can we use Adyen on Shopify?
Yes, as a third-party provider, with an Adyen account. Shopify's help page lists what you give up compared with Shopify Payments.
Why would we choose Adyen over Shopify Payments?
Usually to run payments for stores, apps and physical shops through one provider and one contract. For an online-only store, Shopify Payments is usually simpler.

Before we scope the work

  • Which data or customer journey needs to connect, and which system owns it?
  • What access, plan features or API permissions are available?
  • Does an existing connector cover the requirement, including failures and updates?
  • Who will maintain the connection, and how will you know it is working?

Send your current setup and one real example of the flow you need. We'll tell you whether it can be done and what it would take.
